Chiropractic Awareness week

Chiropractic Awareness Week: More than just back pain :-)

Many people don’t realise that Chiropractors treat far more than just low back pain! We treat all kinds of muscle, joint, nerve and movement issues and our mission at Pure Health Chiropractic & Wellness during Chiropractic Awareness Week is to give our community a viable treatment alternative for musculoskeletal treatment.

We all know that getting to see your GP and/or a physio at the moment is not easy. Chiropractic and Sports and Remedial Massage therapy are a viable treatment alternative if you need help.

We want to help ease the NHS burden

Recent data from a 2023 study by the BCA shows that over half (56%) of Brits across the country feel hesitant about seeking help from their GP about bone and joint related issues* – with data from NHS England showing that over 30 million working days are lost due to musculoskeletal conditions every year in the UK*. Our profession’s annual awareness week, Chiropractic Awareness Week, aims to raise awareness about the importance of back, bone and joint health.

Chronic back pain

Liesa review

We want to help to give you a longer term solution…

Not only can be help you to get out of pain, but we will look to improve your overall health and function so that you are less likely to have a recurrence of injury. We want to empower you to gain a long term solution! Here are some starter tips to keep back, bone and joint pain at ease:

  • Sit up: If you’re watching TV or using a computer or mobile device for a prolonged period of time, make sure you are sitting comfortably with your back supported in the base of the chair. Sitting with your head forward adds strain on your neck and back, so also make sure that you are sitting with your head directly over your body.

  • Get moving: You back loves to stay active, so try and move around every 20-30 minutes, whether at home or at work (an easy trick is to stand up every time you’re on the phone). Being active is also a great way to keep back pain at bay, but don’t be tempted to go straight in, full throttle with high endurance-based activities, especially if you haven’t exercised in a while. You can gradually build up your exercise load with swimming, walking or yoga which can be less demanding on your body, while still keeping you physically active.

  • Take a break: When sitting for long periods of time, ensure you stand up and move around every 30 minutes. When at work, also make sure your desk is set up to support a comfortable position. This is different for everyone so if you don’t feel comfortable in your current set up, try altering the height of your chair or screen.

  • Sleep comfortably: The Sleep Council recommends buying a new mattress at least every 7 years. Mattresses lose their support over time, so if you can feel the springs through your mattress, or the mattress is no longer level, your mattress is no longer providing the support you need. Everyone has different support requirements, so when purchasing your mattress ensure it is supportive for you. If you share a bed and require different mattress types, consider two single mattresses which are designed to be joined together, to ensure you both get the support you need.

  • Check your workspace: If your job primarily involves sitting at a desk and staring at a computer for hours at a time, make sure your desk is set up to support a comfortable position. This is different for everyone so if you don’t feel comfortable in your current set up, try altering the height of your chair or screen.

Chiropractic Awareness Week: Top Tip!

Let’s get moving this Chiropractic Awareness Week!

Here’s one of our top tips:

Why not try to add a daily 15-minute walk around the block or some simple stretches to your lunch break? Every step counts!

Chiropractic Awareness Week

Walking is one of the simplest, yet most effective ways to exercise and relieve the stiffness, aches and pains of sitting or standing for too long. It’s a very underestimated form of activity, but one that we are literally born to do! One of the best things you can do to prevent or help your back pain is to get moving! 15 minutes of walking 3 times a day can significantly reduce your stifness and your risk of having back pain episodes. Get away from that desk, TV or phone and get out there!

In the garden? How to prevent back pain

It’s that time of year when (hopefully) things start to dry out a bit and warm up, and the garden starts growing like crazy! That often means we see more aches, and injury and back pain when gardening and maybe doing a bit too much, and BAM – low back pain!

Book in NOW if you are struggling.

Most of the painful conditions I see are typically avoidable. If you struggle with poor mobility in the spine, hips or ankles then preventing back pain in the garden when bending or squatting is essential. The risk is increased further if you also spend a long period of time in one position or doing the same repetitive task under load. Here are some top tips to help you prevent back pain gardening:

Don’t start with heavy-duty gardening.

Warm up with the lighter jobs, like mowing the lawn, or gentle sweeping or raking. When warmed up and moving well, then move on to something else a little more challenging.

Mix it up.

It is important to vary your activity every 30 minutes or so rather than be in one position for too long. Staying in one position can cause the joints and tissues to adapt and stiffen up, causing increased risk of pain or injury when moving again. Varying your activity can minimise this.

If you are laying a patio or doing any heavy lifting,

Keep the object close to your body and bend through your knees and hips. It is sometimes better to bend one knee rather than two to pick up or move objects (also known as a ‘golfers lift’) as your supporting leg gives you a position of strength.

If you are having any problems or gardening causes you back pain, then Chiropractic care could help. This may be in the short term for symptomatic relief, or with long term preventative or maintenance care to maintain good movement and function.

Or, if you are feeling tight and stiff in those muscles after a buy gardening session, Liesa our massage therapist can help!

Preventing back pain when gardening

After a miserable and wet winter (and a pretty chilly spring), the weather has really warmed up! Many people (including my other half), are looking forward to getting being back in the garden and getting their hands dirty, but sometimes doing too much, too soon in the garden can cause back pain!

Most of the painful conditions I see are typically avoidable. If you struggle with poor mobility in the spine, hips or ankles then preventing back pain in the garden when bending or squatting is essential. The risk is increased further if you also spend a long period of time in one position or doing the same repetitive task under load. Hip pain replacement

Hip or groin pain

If you regularly read my articles, you may know that I love to be active. Recently though, low back, hip or groin pain have stopped me in my tracks. Yes, even us chiropractors aren’t immune from pain or injury! Fortunately, I know how to deal with it which often means that I can help you too!

For those that are also struggling and can’t get around so easily, I know how frustrating it can be and I’ll do all I can to help you back to activity. However, when it comes to more complicated joints like the hip, it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the pain. It may not be the hip at all!

The hip joint is a hugely important joint in our ability to move well and stabilise through the rest of the body, particularly the spine. There are a multitude of muscles and other tissues that attach across the hip, pelvis and torso which help to keep us stable through our everyday movements like squatting or bending. If these tissues are not coordinating and contracting adequately, possibly due to injury, restriction or neurological misfiring, then pain and dysfunction can often occur. Over time this can lead to poor movement, weakness, instability and (if long-term), arthritic changes.

Hip and groin pain

It could even be that your pain is not coming from the hip at all – it may be your lower back or sacro-iliac joint thats causing all the trouble. The best way to find out is to get checked over.

No matter what your problem, we will look to help you to address any underlying causes, empowering you in improving and maintaining your health.

Gardening and back pain

Well, we’ve had a miserable and wet winter, but things are looking up! Recent events can all soon get you down, but my hope grows that we might finally get some sunnier and drier weather so we can all brighten up and get outside more with family and friends. I think we are all looking forward to that again. Many people (including my other half), are also looking forward to being back in the garden and getting their hands dirty, but sometimes gardening can give you back pain!

Most of the painful conditions I see are typically avoidable. If you struggle with poor mobility in the spine, hips or ankles then bending or squatting to work in the garden can leave you open to an increased risk of injury. Shockwave therapy

Persistent pain or injury? Shockwave could help

We are open, and Shockwave Therapy may be able to help.

If you suffer with long term soft tissue or joint problems that don’t seem to be settling, including: plantar fasciitis; heel spurs; shoulder calcification; Achilles tendinopathy and tennis elbow; then Shockwave Therapy is an option!

Radial Shockwave therapy is a safe, proven and effective, non-invasive way to treat various long term joint and soft tissue complaints, including:

  • Foot & ankle pain (Achilles tendinopathy; plantar fasciitis; heel spurs)
  • Shoulder pain (calcification; tendonitis)
  • Hip pain (bursitis)
  • Knee pain (patellar tendonitis)
  • Elbow pain (tennis and golfers elbow)
  • Muscular pain (trigger points)

Shockwave

We’ve seen some great results so far, and have some very happy clients, including Kerry who says:

“After 4 years of crippling pain and tears shockwave was suggested to me by a friend. I can honestly say Shockwave changed my life!! Pain free, back to running and wearing any type of shoe after 8-10 weeks. Amazing ⭐️ Chris and his team are extremely professional, helpful and friendly. The treatments have a slightly strange sensation but not painful. Affordable treatments too (but the relief is priceless!). I cannot recommend this service and treatment highly enough.”

We have two treatment options available at our clinic in Stafford, either Acute (less than three month history), or Chronic (more than three months). Both include advice and exercises. For more information, including costs, please visit our dedicated Shockwave Therapy page.

Let us help you to achieve better health. You can book an appointment with us by calling 01785 530911 or alternatively you can book using our online diary.

SPorts and Remedial Massage

We are now open for massage, chiropractic & shockwave!

Hello again! We hope you are well 🙂 We’ve been back open for Chiropractic and Shockwave for over a month now with our qualified Chiropractor Chris, and even though it’s been different, we hope you haven’t noticed too much of a change.

Although all of the extra cleaning procedures, spacing out of appointments and PPE mean that our costs have actually increased and we are seeing less people, to help our patients during these tough times, we are keeping our prices the same for now. Hopefully it’ll get back to normal soon, but unfortunately we may have to see how it goes over the next few months as to whether we need to increase our charges a little to cover the extra costs.

It’s been a tough time for small businesses like ours over the last few months, and will continue to be tough for a while yet. We are asking for your help by simply letting other people know we are here. It only takes a few minutes, so if you’re happy to help us please do.

You can do this by giving us positive reviews on Google, or by hitting the like or “Invite friends” (click the three dots “…” then “Invite friends” option in the page menu next to the “Share” button) on our Facebook pages. We would really appreciate the support 🙂

That being said, we are relatively busy at the moment. Lock-down seems to have brought about a few aches and pains! Chris has increased his clinic hours from the start of August to cope with demand, and also started seeing new chiropractic patients face to face again. He will also be changing his hours slightly from September.

The biggest news is that Sports and Remedial massage therapy will be starting up again from August! Yay!

SPorts and Remedial Massage Therapy

Yes, Matt and Liesa are back! Again, there will be some procedural changes, but hopefully you won’t notice anything significant. Online bookings are now open for sports and remedial massage in Stafford, but you can also call 01785 530911 for an appointment..
