Back pain Chiropractor

How a Chiropractor helped his own back pain (part 2)

The results are in! Following on from part 1 (which you can find here), my recent blood results came back in, with some interesting findings.

Just as a recap: earlier this year, I’d had chronic stiffness and pain in my lower back which wasn’t resolving with all the typical treatment and exercises. An MRI and bloods indicated inflammation as a factor.

As part of my continuing education as a chiropractor, I currently study functional medicine, which looks to identify root causes of disease and modify diet or lifestyle to help.

One thing I will emphasise is that before you make any significant changes to your diet, you need to discuss and work with your healthcare provider. Some diets require monitoring, particularly if you are on certain medications or have some health conditions.

I always thought my diet was good, eating mostly quality meats, vegetables, brown rice, bread and pasta, fruit, porridge and natural honey. Minimal sugar or “junk”. All the things that are good for us right? Well, it turns out they’re not so good for inflammation or blood glucose/insulin control.

So, what did I do? After much research, I started a low carb, high fat diet (LCHF) combined with daily vitamin D3 and magnesium supplements. Keeping carbs to less than 50g/day, it meant no bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, beer or oats but plenty of green cruciferous vegetables, healthy saturated fats and protein. I now tend to eat things like full fat dairy, oily fish, meats, chicken, nuts and wine instead. I also practice intermittent fasting during the week (16 hours fasting, and an 8 hour window of eating). Combined with my usual exercise, I found that my back pain and stiffness improved immensely, but I also had some other interesting changes.

My GGT (fatty liver) dropped massively from 132 to 40 IU/L, and my CRP (inflammation) from 2.64 to 1.84 mg/L but there’s still improvements to be made. My total cholesterol was now 8.8, with high LDL BUT most importantly all triglyceride and HDL ratios were perfect. I’d also lost 6kgs of body fat!

My changes are very personal, and if you suffer similar issues I suggest you do your own research and see someone for guidance. But, I’m now changed for life and won’t be going back!

Back pain Chiropractor

A Chiropractor with back pain? What did I do?

A Chiropractor with a bad back and back pain sounds a bit ironic, but the truth is that many of us started out with back problems before we learned how to fix them!

Personally, I started having issues in my twenties after years of sitting for upwards of 12 hours a day writing computer programs for a living. As I often tell my patients, all that sitting does you no good, and eventually after 2 years of seeing various “experts”, I ended up having disc surgery.

Twenty-two years and a change of career later, it’s perhaps not surprising that (along with thousands of my patients), I’ve learned how to manage my back well. However, I’ve had my ups and downs.

More recently, and after a rather difficult 18 months for everyone, I had a flare up of back and nerve pain. This went on for months, and despite regular exercise and a seemingly healthy diet of home cooked meals, wholegrain carbs, salad, and moderate alcohol intake, it just wouldn’t shift. It seemed that all the stress, poor sleep, and long hours had taken it’s toll. I decided to have an MRI scan at Heath Lodge.

For anyone not familiar with MRI scans, the circled area above shows quite a lot of degeneration and inflammation. Although the changes were a little surprising, it didn’t concern me too much. What I was really interested in was the inflammation – no wonder I was struggling!

I also had some bloods tested with Thriva. They showed a CRP of 2.64, high total cholesterol at 6.7 (but good ratios), and very high GGT (fatty liver) despite not drinking much. All of this pointed to INFLAMMATION and explained all the unrelenting stiffness and pain I’d been having. Luckily, after studying the nutritional and lifestyle changes that could help, I knew that, along with the typical hands-on treatment and exercise, it was time to make some serious changes! In part 2, I’ll let you know what I did.

Sports massage Stafford

Stafford sports massage – helping you recover

Our Stafford sports massage therapists could help you to recover from muscle soreness, and a recent study backs this up.

It’s great to be able to exercise regularly, and it is well established that keeping active benefits human health, especially reducing the risk of obesity and cardiovascular disease. However, occasionally you can overdo it, causing temporary muscle damage and what is often known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).

DOMS can often cause stiffness, reduced range of motion and even a drop in performance for those that like to train regularly. People often try all sorts of recovery methods including ice, stretching or low intensity exercise. But, as a review of clinical trials concluded, there is some evidence that sports massage reduces delayed onset muscle soreness.

Getting a good sports massage after training might mean you get fewer aches in the following days.

The effect of massage therapy is thought to be to increase skin and muscle temperature, blood and lymphatic flow, and parasympathetic activity. As a result, the effects include relief of muscle tension and stiffness, reduction of muscle soreness, and increased joint range of motion. Which then means you can get back to training at your full potential quicker!

Heel

Foot pain? Shockwave could help

“Plantar fasciitis” (or as one of my patients called it once “planty flappy-itis”), is one of the most common foot or heel pain problems we see.

Sometimes called “policeman’s heel”, this nickname is given to the sharp foot pain when walking or putting weight on your heel for a long time. Anyone can get it, and you would definitely know if you had it. It hurts. A lot.

If you are unlucky enough to get it and don’t deal with it appropriately, it can go on for months (or sometimes years) and can become extremely difficult to be rid of.

Thought to be inflammation in the tissue running across the bottom of the foot, typical signs are:

  • Sharp pain when first putting the heel on the ground (especially in the mornings)
  • Easing with walking, but slowly returning
  • A “burning” sensation in the heel that doesn’t seem to ease

There are many causes and risk factors, and it’s important to get properly assessed before deciding on an appropriate treatment plan.

Shockwave Plantar Fasciitis

Fortunately, one treatment option we offer is Radial Shockwave Therapy. This has been shown to be an effective way to treat plantar fasciitis and we’ve seen some great results so far.

“After 4 years of crippling pain and tears shockwave was suggested to me by a friend. I can honestly say Shockwave changed my life!! Pain free, back to running and wearing any type of shoe after 8-10 weeks. Amazing ⭐️ Chris and his team are extremely professional, helpful and friendly. The treatments have a slightly strange sensation but not painful. Affordable treatments too (but the relief is priceless!). I cannot recommend this service and treatment highly enough.”

We have two treatment options available at our clinic in Stafford, either Acute (less than three month history), or Chronic (more than three months). Both include advice and exercises. For more information, including costs, please visit our dedicated Shockwave Therapy page.

Hip pain replacement

Hip or groin pain

If you regularly read my articles, you may know that I love to be active. Recently though, low back, hip or groin pain have stopped me in my tracks. Yes, even us chiropractors aren’t immune from pain or injury! Fortunately, I know how to deal with it which often means that I can help you too!

For those that are also struggling and can’t get around so easily, I know how frustrating it can be and I’ll do all I can to help you back to activity. However, when it comes to more complicated joints like the hip, it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the pain. It may not be the hip at all!

The hip joint is a hugely important joint in our ability to move well and stabilise through the rest of the body, particularly the spine. There are a multitude of muscles and other tissues that attach across the hip, pelvis and torso which help to keep us stable through our everyday movements like squatting or bending. If these tissues are not coordinating and contracting adequately, possibly due to injury, restriction or neurological misfiring, then pain and dysfunction can often occur. Over time this can lead to poor movement, weakness, instability and (if long-term), arthritic changes.

Hip and groin pain

It could even be that your pain is not coming from the hip at all – it may be your lower back or sacro-iliac joint thats causing all the trouble. The best way to find out is to get checked over.

No matter what your problem, we will look to help you to address any underlying causes, empowering you in improving and maintaining your health.

We can help you to achieve better health. Why not come and see what our chiropractors and massage therapists in Stafford and Newport can do for you. We look forward to seeing you.

Matt Shockwave

My experience of Shockwave Therapy

Wondering if Shockwave Therapy could help you? Read about Matt’s experience with a long standing elbow injury:

By Matt Price (Sports Massage Therapist & Crossfit athlete)

I had a recurring issue with repetitive strain in my elbow otherwise known as “tennis elbow”. It kept me back from training and enjoying it was impossible. I wasn’t able to carry out a number of exercises that I’d need to do to train effectively and I’d been searching and searching for an answer to resolve my issues. However, nothing was long lasting and effective as I wanted it to be and I wondered if Shockwave could help..

Chris at Pure Health Chiropractic & Wellness was able to introduce me to Shockwave treatment. As I’d never heard of it before this was a slightly concerning treatment to be faced with, but the pain and annoyance my arm was causing me I decided it was worth a go to see if we could resolve it once and for all.

Treatment 1

During my first treatment I was introduced to the Shockwave device and the procedure. Chris carried out a full examination and reassured me that it was only a local injury that was causing the pain, rather than coming from somewhere else. We then started the treatment and initially the noise the machine head created was a little concerning, however Chris explained what was happening and that the noise was normal and wasn’t to be feared. There was a little pain and discomfort from this first treatment (to say the least) but I could feel the muscle fibres separating with each tap of the Shockwave. You can see my first session in the video below:

Treatment 2

By the second treatment I still hadn’t tested the area or over-used it due to the rawness being created from the previous treatment but I had been assured that this was normal and actually a good thing. The 2nd treatment was just as painful as the 1st but with even better results. The pain after the treatment wasn’t anywhere near as brutal or as awkward to deal with. Within 2 days of this treatment I was able to carry out light movements that aggravated the area before, from bench press to push up or even burpees. All of these were out of the picture until after this treatment and the results spurred me on to the next as the result I’d been looking for was on its way.

Treatment 3

Now number 3! I now believed I was on the road to recovery and nothing could stop me. I was starting to get the pains increasing back but I was training more than I’d been advised. This treatment wasn’t as painful as I’d expected which is always good. The pain centre had changed due to the recovery and the movements I’d been carrying out, the amazing Shockwave machine is versatile and allows the user (in this case Chris) to change the size of the treatment head to target the area further. Although there was still some discomfort this was so much more manageable than the previous treatment and I was already looking forward to training on it. See the progress in the video below:

Treatment 4

This was the most satisfying and energising treatment to date, Chris rechecked my overall spine and alignment and made sure I was still only having issues in the area we were treating. In this treatment we increased the intensity of the striking head of the Shockwave treatment machine (oh joy I thought), however this wasn’t as bad as anticipated and the results were amazing. Almost immediately I could feel the muscle relax and the tissue move allowing the pain the decrease and the tension to be reduced.

Overall Experience

The results from the treatments have allowed me to overcome the pain and the discomfort I’d been struggling with for the past 6-8 months. I put this down to both the Shockwave treatment and the knowledge of Chris at Pure Health and I’d definitely recommend seeking out this procedure if you have been struggling with recurring issues on any part of your body.  This machine will sort you out and give you a new determination to train or recover and enjoy life pain free!
