The importance of nutrition in Chiropractic care

Many people underestimate how important good nutrition is for healing and overall health. Even though we think we eat healthily, modern diets often lack essential nutrients and vitamins our bodies need to thrive.

Why Nutrition Matters for Healing and Health

Poor nutrition and lifestyle choices can create a “nutritional gap”—meaning your body isn’t getting enough of the nutrients it needs. At the same time, modern life exposes us to more “bad stuff,” such as stress, poor sleep, too much junk food, social media, and lack of activity. These factors don’t just affect our mood and general health—they can also slow down healing, prolong injuries, and even contribute to chronic pain because the body can’t focus its energy on repair.

How Nutrition Impacts Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care isn’t just about relieving pain—it’s about helping your body function at its best. Your body needs essential nutrients to produce energy, hormones, and connective tissue like bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Without proper nutrition, you may experience fatigue, hormone imbalances, poor tissue quality, stiffness, and a higher risk of injury.

In other words, even the best chiropractic adjustments are harder to benefit from if your nutrition and lifestyle aren’t supporting your body’s natural healing processes.

Why Diet Alone May Not Be Enough

  • Nutrients in food are declining: Modern farming depletes soil of minerals, and fruits and vegetables are often stored for months before reaching your table. Even organic produce is affected.
  • Meat may be less nutritious: Livestock fed on grains instead of natural diets receive fewer nutrients, which affects the quality of the meat you eat.
  • Modern lifestyles increase nutrient demands: Stress, activity levels, and environmental factors mean your body needs more nutrients than in the past.

Supplements: Helpful, But Not a Fix-All

Taking a daily multivitamin is useful, but supplements are designed to complement a healthy diet, not replace it. Many over-the-counter supplements are low quality or poorly absorbed, so they may not make a noticeable difference.

We recommend high-quality, bioavailable supplements like In Health One a Day Essential Multi, which contain forms of vitamins and minerals that your body can actually use. Some people, due to genetic factors, cannot convert inactive vitamins into the forms their bodies need—so the right supplement makes a real difference.

Stiff and achy back pain after gardening? We can help!

It’s that time of year when (hopefully) things start to dry out a bit and warm up. Unfortunately, that can often mean that we get more aches and pains, back pain and injuries when out in the garden looking to tidy things up. It’s easily done after a winter off, and frustrating as you want to get back out there as soon as possible.

BOOK IN NOW if you are struggling. We can help get you back in the garden if you have muscle, joint or nerve problems affecting your quality of life.

Most of the painful conditions I see are avoidable. If you struggle with poor mobility in the spine, hips or ankles then preventing back pain in the garden when bending or squatting is essential. The risk is increased further if you also spend a long period of time in one position or doing the same repetitive task under load. Here are some top tips to help you prevent back pain gardening:

Don’t start with heavy-duty gardening.

Warm up with the lighter jobs, like mowing the lawn or gentle sweeping or raking. When warmed up and moving well, then move on to something else a little more challenging.

Mix it up.

It is important to vary your activity every 30 minutes or so rather than be in one position for too long. Staying in one position can cause the joints and tissues to adapt and stiffen up, causing increased risk of pain or injury when moving again. Varying your activity can minimise this.

If you are laying a patio or doing any heavy lifting.

Keep the object close to your body and bend through your knees and hips. It is sometimes better to bend one knee rather than two to pick up or move objects (also known as a ‘golfers lift’) as your supporting leg gives you a position of strength.

Take Breaks

Listen to your body! Remember that you have plenty of time to get the jobs done, so don’t feel like it all has to be done in one session. If your back starts to complain then take a break, go for a short walk and let things ease before starting again – your garden isn’t going anywhere, but if you give yourself a back injury then neither are you!

If you are having any problems or gardening causes you back pain, then Chiropractic care could help. This may be in the short term for symptomatic relief, or with long term preventative or maintenance care to maintain good movement and function.

Or, if you are feeling tight and stiff in those muscles after a buy gardening session, Liesa our massage therapist can help!

In the garden? How to prevent back pain

It’s that time of year when (hopefully) things start to dry out a bit and warm up, and the garden starts growing like crazy! That often means we see more aches, and injury and back pain when gardening and maybe doing a bit too much, and BAM – low back pain!

Preventing back pain when gardening

After a miserable and wet winter (and a pretty chilly spring), the weather has really warmed up! Many people (including my other half), are looking forward to getting being back in the garden and getting their hands dirty, but sometimes doing too much, too soon in the garden can cause back pain!

Most of the painful conditions I see are typically avoidable. If you struggle with poor mobility in the spine, hips or ankles then preventing back pain in the garden when bending or squatting is essential. Help your back pain with the “Dying Bug”

If you suffer with a back pain or injury, it can be a real burden getting back to normal movement. Even simple tasks like getting in and out of chairs, turning in bed, or putting your socks on can be a real challenge.

Pain Affects Coordination and Stability

Often when we have a nasty back injury, our ability to activate the muscles which support our back and hips become compromised, often due to something called “pain inhibition”. Our muscles haven’t gone anywhere, they are still there and trying to work. But often injury can disrupt the nerve signals that tell them to activate at the appropriate time. This can affect our coordination, and creates instability when we move, causing more pain, and even sometimes re-injuring the area.

We can help you get better

As well as working on spinal and pelvic function with hands-on treatment, another way to start on the road to recovery is to begin working on activating these muscles again in a controlled manner. The “Dying Bug” track is a progression of exercises designed to help you learn to engage the spinal and pelvic muscles again, and give you the confidence to return to normal activities. Here, our Stafford and Newport Chiropractor Chris runs through some of the steps of the progression and explains why it is so important.

If you suffer from back pain, muscle, joint or nerve problems, then let us help you to achieve better health. You can book an appointment with our chiropractor Chris or massage therapist Liesa, by calling 01785 530911 in Stafford, or 01952 825042 in Newport. Alternatively you can book using our online diary.

Hip pain replacement

Hip or groin pain

If you regularly read my articles, you may know that I love to be active. Recently though, low back, hip or groin pain have stopped me in my tracks. Yes, even us chiropractors aren’t immune from pain or injury! Fortunately, I know how to deal with it which often means that I can help you too!

For those that are also struggling and can’t get around so easily, I know how frustrating it can be and I’ll do all I can to help you back to activity. However, when it comes to more complicated joints like the hip, it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the pain. It may not be the hip at all!

The hip joint is a hugely important joint in our ability to move well and stabilise through the rest of the body, particularly the spine. There are a multitude of muscles and other tissues that attach across the hip, pelvis and torso which help to keep us stable through our everyday movements like squatting or bending. If these tissues are not coordinating and contracting adequately, possibly due to injury, restriction or neurological misfiring, then pain and dysfunction can often occur. Over time this can lead to poor movement, weakness, instability and (if long-term), arthritic changes.

Hip and groin pain

It could even be that your pain is not coming from the hip at all – it may be your lower back or sacro-iliac joint thats causing all the trouble. The best way to find out is to get checked over.

No matter what your problem, we will look to help you to address any underlying causes, empowering you in improving and maintaining your health.

We can help you to achieve better health. Why not come and see what our chiropractors and massage therapists in Stafford and Newport can do for you. We look forward to seeing you.

Gardening and back pain

Well, we’ve had a miserable and wet winter, but things are looking up! Recent events can all soon get you down, but my hope grows that we might finally get some sunnier and drier weather so we can all brighten up and get outside more with family and friends. I think we are all looking forward to that again.
